For those of you with AK's in 7.62x39: Ammo Advisory
Wolf Military Classic HP is loaded with the 8m3 effect bullet. Unlike other Russian 7.62x39 HP, the 8m3 effect bullet works and works well. Due to its comparatively large mass and energetic fragmentation at ranges out to 100 yards or more with reliable tumbling at ranges far beyond that, this is probably the single most effective bullet for this caliber that is commonly available. Don't go paying any ridiculous premiums for this stuff as it isn't really a specialty load and the bullet is available in a few other products, but if you have the option to buy the Wolf Military Classic Hollow Point I'd choose it over all the other loads in common circulation out there right now.

Thanks Rev.
What do you recommend in .308? |
Re: For those of you with AK's in 7.62x39: Ammo Advisory
.308 is a great caliber with some really great loads out there, the legendary German 7.62x51 with the deep crimps was famous for its devestating frag effect but AFAIK it dried up long ago. Right now I can't think of any compelling buys in this caliber, there's plenty of great HP and SP out there but you really pay for it. I'd probably stock up on plain old ball and tracers while avoiding the Indian manufactured surplus like the plague. It would be neat to have some M-118 just to have it.

Re: For those of you with AK's in 7.62x39: Ammo Advisory
The standard 7.62x39 HP that doesn't expand is a 122gr bullet. I have no idea why this bullet exists as the Russians aren't stupid when it comes to arms. I'm guessing it was an impromptu way to skirt import or export laws about hunting cartridges as it is nothing more than 122gr fmj M43 enhanced but with a tiny hole in the tip. The 8m3 is a 124gr HP bullet produced at the Ulyanovsk factory. Wolf Military Classic HP uses a 124gr HP bullet and it has an Ulyanovsk headstamp.

Re: For those of you with AK's in 7.62x39: Ammo Advisory
The Brown Bear at JG is 8m5 soft point. It tends to fragment instead of expand, but not as well as the 8m3. With 8m5 you usually just get the exposed lead point itself tearing off and some lead squeezing out. It's still good stuff, but not quite as good. They were also selling the 700rd spam cans(out of stock) but claimed they were Brown Bear. All the 700rd spam cans I've seen before were Uly loaded with the 8m2, which is a tumbling bullet like M67 that also has decent consistency. I wonder if this Brown Bear marked stuff is the same?
18 cents a round is kind of shocking to some. I remember when you could get Sapsan that also had the 8m3 bullet for $65/1000 before shipping from Aim Surplus. Of course that was low even back then and the world marches on. I feel that 13 to 15 cents a round, delivered, is a bit closer to where the prices should really be but honestly 18 cents a round for the most powerful 7.62x39 made is a bargain if you compare it to similar HP or SP loads in other calibers. You'll pay that much for the fraghappy 55gr 5.56x45 rounds and they aren't working with the same mass and energy you get from the 7.62x39. |
Re: For those of you with AK's in 7.62x39: Ammo Advisory
Hey Rev: You know a lot more about ballistics than me. :aetsch:
My 2c was in offering a low $/rd. Seems like 15 - 16 c/rd is about the best you can find these days. lots at 20c/. At least the places I know of anyway. Prices at gun shows seem to be about the same, maybe a bit higher even. |

I have a Dragonov in .308 and I want something that can really reach out there and touch someone, but yet something I can afford in bulk. I like IMI BTHP surplus ammo, but its getting hard to find. Then of course there is Lake City Long Range, but it ain't exactly cheap. I haven't personally tried it yet, but I have had a few friends recommend "canned heat" from Georgia Arms. Suppose to be really good affordable ammo and the guys that are recommending really know their stuff. So that may be an option for you...HTH |
